Los Angeles roof leak repair, starting where the water gets in

Leaking now? Call, and a roofer comes out today. In the rain we stop it that day. The lasting repair waits for a dry roof.

Where the water drips and where it gets in are seldom the same spot. Water comes in at one place and runs along the felt or down a rafter. It drips wherever it finds a gap. Finding where it gets in is most of a leak repair, and it's where we start.

Water inside today?

Call. A phone call is faster than the form, and a roofer comes out today. Before anyone climbs up, we tell you which visit this is: the stop-the-water visit, or the permanent repair. In the rain it's the first one, a cover or a temporary seal that keeps the room dry tonight.

While you wait for us

  • Put a bucket under the drip, with a towel in the bottom so it doesn't splash.
  • Move anything electrical away from the water.
  • If the ceiling is bulging, keep people out of that room and don't poke it.
  • Keep off the roof. Anything wet up there is slick, and tile cracks underfoot.
  • Take a photo of the stain each day. If it grows, we want to know.

Where leaks start on LA roofs

  • Step and counter flashing at a stucco chimney or a wall
  • A cracked pipe boot around a plumbing vent
  • A valley packed with leaves
  • Worn-out felt under a tile roof whose tiles still look fine
  • Standing water and open seams on a flat roof
  • A skylight whose seal has dried out

How we find the leak

  1. Inside first. We start at the stain, then go into the attic and follow the water marks up the boards to where they begin.
  2. On the roof, once it's dry. We look at everything above that point and uphill of it.
  3. With a hose, if we need one. If the source still isn't clear, we wet one section at a time while somebody watches from the attic.
  4. Before we leave, we tell you what we found. That includes how much the lasting roof repair has to open up.

What sets the cost of a roof leak repair

  • Which visit it is: stopping the water in the rain, or the lasting repair on a dry roof
  • The spot the water comes through, and how much has to come up to reach it
  • Felt or boards under the covering that got wet and have to be replaced
  • The roof covering, and how hard the spot is to reach

The permanent repair waits for a dry roof, and you see its price in writing first.

When the next storm comes

After the first real rain of the season we get in touch. If you want, we come out and check that the ceiling is dry.

If it leaks in the same place within the first winter, we come back. There's no new bill.

Leak questions

The leak stopped when the rain did. Do I still need you?

Yes, before the next storm. A leak that dries out between storms is still there, and each storm wets the same boards again. Book the free roof check for the next dry week.

Should I put a tarp on it myself?

No. Stay off a wet roof and call. Covering it is what the first visit is for.

The first-rain visit

A roof repair isn't finished until it has rained on it.
